BRAZIL NORTHWEST RAILWAY
The construction of the Brazil Northwest Railway is the major reason for the growth of Mato Grosso do Sul in the early decades of the twentieth century. The great number of people and goods has facilitated the exchange of the state with other regions of Brazil, besides helping in the development of the places where the road passed by.
Brazil Northwest Railway had a large number of workers which were in two different areas, Bauru and Corumba. Many of these workers established roots in the region after the work was finished.
Inaugurated in 1914, the railway was expanded, reaching Corumba in 1950.
The Pantanal Train has operated crossing the Northwest railway for 81 years. In 1995, with the end of RFFSA and the concession of the railway, the touristic ride was suspended and the transport of cargo started to operate in the route.
